In SoulSilver you just have to get the 16 badges from johto and kanto and that guy guarding the door will be gone. But in firered & LeafGreen you have to get some weird crystals that are really hard to fin and get to the islands where the crystals will be. And also it is apparently a lot easier in soulsilver than the actual firered/leafgreen.
